Spirit animals have appeared in myths, stories, and symbolism across cultures for centuries. They are not just creatures—they are guides, protectors, and messengers, each carrying its own wisdom and energy. In my artwork, spirit animals are woven into the narratives of goddesses and their symbolism, serving as anchors of meaning, reflection, and connection.
Every brushstroke that forms these animals carries intention—they are more than embellishments; they are storytellers. In this post, I’ll share the symbolism behind four spirit animals featured in my work: the Owl, the Crow, the Snake, and the Butterfly, and how they invite reflection, resilience, and growth into our lives.
🦉 The Owl: Wisdom and Intuition in Stillness
Owls have long been associated with wisdom, knowledge, and a connection to the unseen. In mythology, they are often depicted as companions to deities of wisdom, like Athena. Their ability to see in the dark represents clarity in times of uncertainty and the power of quiet observation.
In my artwork, the owl symbolizes intuitive wisdom, silent strength, and the courage to see beyond illusions. Its presence in a painting invites us to pause, reflect, and trust our inner knowing, even when the path ahead feels unclear.
Reflection for You: Are you listening to your intuition? Sometimes the quietest voice within holds the most profound answers.
🐦 The Crow: Transformation and Hidden Potential
Crows are often misunderstood, seen as omens or messengers from the beyond. Yet, across cultures, they symbolize transformation, intelligence, and untapped potential. Crows are survivors, thriving in even the harshest environments.
In my paintings, crows represent the courage to embrace change and the wisdom to find opportunities in chaos. They remind us that transformation isn’t always gentle—it can be raw, challenging, and deeply necessary.
Reflection for You: What transformation are you resisting? The crow reminds us that even in darkness, there’s an opportunity to grow.
🐍 The Snake: Rebirth and Healing
Snakes carry a rich symbolism across cultures, often representing healing, rebirth, and the shedding of old identities. Their ability to shed their skin reminds us of the importance of releasing what no longer serves us to make way for growth.
In my paintings, snakes entwine with blooms and flow through the composition with graceful power. They symbolise transformation, healing, and resilience—an invitation to let go of the past and embrace renewal.
Reflection for You: What are you holding onto that’s keeping you from growing? The snake encourages you to shed, release, and begin again.
🦋 The Butterfly: Growth and Fragility
Butterflies are delicate yet resilient, fragile yet transformative. They are universal symbols of growth, change, and fleeting beauty. From the cocoon emerges a creature that embraces its new form with grace and freedom.
In my artwork, butterflies often flutter delicately amidst florals, symbolising hope, personal evolution, and embracing change with lightness. They remind us to appreciate the beauty in every stage of growth, even the uncomfortable ones.
Reflection for You: Are you allowing yourself to grow, even when it feels uncomfortable? The butterfly teaches us to trust the process of transformation.
Why These Spirit Animals Matter in My Work
Each spirit animal in my paintings isn’t there by chance—they are woven intentionally into the narrative to add layers of meaning, invite reflection, and resonate deeply with the viewer.
When paired with the goddesses in my work, they become symbols of strength, resilience, and guidance. They are reminders that our stories are interconnected with something much larger, something timeless and universal.
Whether it’s the owl’s still wisdom, the crow’s transformative power, the snake’s renewal, or the butterfly’s delicate growth—these spirit animals offer us lessons, if only we’re willing to listen.
